I think that the story was absurd. You can’t have a town in which you kill each other for fun. They conduct the lottery every June but by killing people there is no benefit from it. I think that they shouldn’t conduct the lottery. I think that the author of the book wanted the Lottery to show everybody how evil humans were. They people in the town laugh at other people misery and are happy that they were not picked.
Compared to the video I think that the movie is creepier. The video shows how she died and they actually stoned her to death. I think that they shouldn’t do that since it would be better for everybody if there were more people since they could work more efficiently. The book was about the same as the book. The movie had shown more foreshadowing when the children were laughing and taking stones. It shows how evil the people were and how they cant tell the difference between right and wrong.
They gave the reader no reason why they would do the lottery. The only possibility for the lottery is either that they have fun doing it or it helps the people in some way. In the book the people are happy to have the lottery but when somebody gets the paper with the black dot the person says that it was unfair. They all want to stone somebody and are happy to stone anybody along as it is not its self.

Dear Smithereens,
nice post! My name is Peter Ricci, and I am a college student and journalist. Currently, I am writing for 'Too Shy to Stop,' an online magazine that focuses on culture and the arts.
My latest story, as chance would have it, is about "The Lottery," and I stumbled across your post while doing research. Here is the link to the story: http://www.tooshytostop.com/index.php/2009/02/13/can-you-believe-those-editors-ran-that/. I focus on both the themes and history of the story, assessing why it creates such discomfort with readers and whether a story of "The Lottery"-type would find such controversy.
So check it out! I think you'll like it. Be sure to leave a comment, also. We love reader input!
Sincerely,
Peter Ricci
